Our Mature Driver Tune-Up (Online) courses are approved and licensed by the California DMV. Once you complete our course, we email you an individually numbered, Official California DMV Mature Driver Improvement Certificate.
You do not need to inform the DMV of your course completion. You just provide your certificate to your insurance company to receive your auto insurance discount.
California State-Mandated Senior Discount
According to California State insurance law (Insurance Code Section 11628.3) your auto insurance company must provide drivers 55 years old or older who have a valid California driver's license with a discount on their auto insurance.
Contact your insurance company to learn how much of a discount you will receive over three years.
Course Requirements
Initial Course (6.5 hours): Required if you have never taken a Mature Driver Improvement Course.
Renewal Course (4 hours): Available if you have previously completed a Mature Driver Course and your certificate is still valid — not more than 4 years old.
If you completed a Mature Driver Course from another DMV-licensed provider and your certificate has not expired, you are eligible to take our Renewal Course.
If your previous course was for another state, check with your insurance company to confirm whether you qualify for California’s Renewal Course.
Are Mature Driver and Safe Driver Courses the Same?
The Mature Driver Improvement Program is the official California DMV program for drivers 55 and older, designed to improve safety and qualify you for an auto insurance discount. It is not for traffic tickets.
The official DMV certificate you receive after completing a Mature Driver Improvement course is accepted by your insurance company to apply for their Defensive Driver or Safe Driver Discount.

No Tests Required
You don’t need to take or pass any tests — simply complete all course lessons to earn your completion certificate.
Optional Final Test: A fully optional test is available at the end for those who want to check their knowledge. It is not required to receive your certificate.
Learn Your Way
Listen to the audio, read the course material, and watch the videos — that’s all it takes to earn your certificate.
People 55 years of age or older who have a valid California driver's license can take our courses.
Some insurance companies (AAA), give discounts to people 50 or older. Contact your auto insurance agent to find out if you qualify and learn how much you will save.
The Californa DMV mandates the following course lengths:
National courses from the AARP and AAA are longer since they must comply with requirements from multiple other states. AARP's Initial Course is 8 hours long, which is 1.5 hours longer than our course!
On average, people save up to 15% a year. The amount of your auto insurance discount will depend on various factors including your insurance company and driving record.
Your discount is good for a period of three years. After three years, you can take the shorter 'Renewal' course to continue your auto insurance discount.
Contact your insurance company to see if you qualify and learn how much you will save.
Take the course on your own schedule. It's easy to stop when you get tired or busy. Your progress is automatically saved so you start the course where you left off. Because the course isn't timed, and you have unlimited time to finish the course, you don't have to rush or finish it in one sitting!
24/7 Course Access
You get convenient access to the online course 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
